Line for Line: Immortal Technique "Industrial Revolution"

Believe it or not, we really try to be positive around here. Give respect. Props. Big ups. You know, all that good stuffs. But we end up going negative a lot more often. In fact, we're always hatin'! Why? Because there is so much fake shit out there, and we hate it.

Lucky for us though, today we get to be both positive and negative. How? Well, we're highlighting a dope track that just calls out all the bullshit. Immortal Technique's "Industrial Revolution".

For those of you who don't know, Immortial Technique is a dope MC representing New York. He's known for his lack of pulling punches and his keeping it real up in the field.  This track is off of his second album "Revolutionary Vol. 2" which dropped in 2003. Which you should have bought a long time ago. Now, let me just give a bit of extra respect here: usually when an MC calls a project "Vol. 1" there is no follow up, Immortal Technique delivered a "Vol. 2". #respect.

So let's get to the Nitty Gritty. Here is the track, brace yourself:

Now for some choice lyrics:

The bling-bling era was cute but it's about to be done
I leave ya full of clips like the moon blockin' the sun
My metaphors are dirty like herpes but harder to catch
Like an escape tunnel in prison I started from scratch

Read that shit again and let it sink in. Dude says that he started from scratch, he did. He self released his shit using money he earned from winning rap battles. Shit.

He goes from there and rightly attacks the record companies. I'm not going to focus on the rhymes for a second, I just want to point out a jewel of truth:

No one's as good as me, they just got better marketing schemes
I'll lead you to your own destruction like sparkin' a fiend
Cuz you got jealousy in your voice like Starscream

This is a great line, the record companies push a lot of talentless rappers who would be jealous of Immortal Technique's skills. Plus a Starscream reference. Shhhiiiiiitttt.

If verse one is good. Verse two is straight science...like few would dare to spit, here it is:

"I want fifty three million dollars for my calloused hands
Like the Bush administration gave to the Taliban
And fuck packing grams nigga, learn to speak and behave
You wanna spend twenty years as a government slave
Two million people in prison keep the government paid
Stuck in a six by eight cell alive in the grave
I was made by Revolution to speak to the masses
Deep in the club toast the truth, reach for you glasses
I'll burn an orphanage just to bring heat to you bastards
Innocent deep in a casket, Colombian fashion
Intoxicated off the flow like thugs passion
You motherfuckers will never get me to stop blastin'
You're better off asking Ariel Sharon for compassion
You're better off begging for twenty points from a label
You're better off battling cancer under telephone cables
Technique chemically unstable, set to explode
Foretold by the dead sea scrolls written in code
So if your message ain't shit, fuck the records you sold
Cuz if you go platinum, it's got nothing to do with luck
It just means that a million people are stupid as fuck
Stuck in the underground in general and rose to the limit
Without distribution managers, a deal, or a gimmick
Revolutionary Volume 2, murder the critics
And leave your fucking body rotting for the roaches and crickets"

Allow me to call out one line which should be the motto of hip hop:

So if your message ain't shit, fuck the records you sold / Cuz if you go platinum, it's got nothing to do with luck / It just means that a million people are stupid as fuck

In Conclusion: If you ain't know about Immortal Technique, now you do. Get wise.

Line for Line: Jay-Z "44 Four's"

When I was putting my recent "Tribe Called Quest" post together last week it occurred to me that I have never written a proper review of anything by Jay-Z for this site. I wrote some dumb jokes about a promo picture for Watch the Throne, and I've written things for other sites, but nothing for my own blog. It's high time that changed, friend.

I think my experience with Jigga matches that many of many true hip hop heads: I was put off by the first song I ever heard from him which was on BET and called "Ain't No Playa". So I decided to pass on Jay-Z until I was introduced to "Friend or Foe", and then I accepted Reasonable Doubt into my collection. After that, I stayed with Jay until about Hard Knock Life, and then I lost interest (for the most part). Every now and then I would check in Jay, and I still bought his albums, but for the most part I thought he had lost it. I still think that. Today I appreciate his technical abilities, but I wouldn't consider myself a fan. I think this chart that I made for the Smart and Angry Blog sums it up (it has some Kanye stuff in it too, ignore that):

But what does this have to do with my Tribe called Quest post? Well, while I was thinking about Tribe's song "Can I Kick It?", I was reminded of Jay's song "22 2's" since it uses almost the same chorus. I never liked the J song. Sure, he uses Tibe's chorus "Can I kick it?" and waits for the crowd to call back "yes you can", and that's all good. I considered it a sign of respect and no big deal, except that Jay didn't include the end of the chorus, the "GO OOOON THEN". Which still drives me nuts. But I still appreciated the lyrics to 22 2's. Yeah, he says "to" or "two" or "too" a lot. That takes planning and is pretty good rapping. But I wouldn't call that song out as anything special since I loath the chorus, but this version of "44 4's", his more recent update, hits this shit on the head, mainly because he pulls the beat from the original song and get's all technical with it. He even starts with a callback to the original "22 2's", then it get's good.

Let's kick it. Go on then...

See? Nobody can deny that Jay knows his stuff. Especially with his 44 4's shit. He does say "four" or "for" a lot! Mad technical skills. This is a lot better than 22 2's, it's very good. Classic.

roc-a-fella 4 ever, Hov 4 life

i shoulda got a five but n*ggas lacked 4sight

Line for Line: Inspectah Deck on "Above The Clouds" by Gang Starr

This post is easy street. All we do is publish the lyrics to a verse that we find particularly dope. Just like how the Source used to publish the hip hop quoteable. Except today you could just do a google for the lyrics.

Today we're featuring Deck's verse from Gang Starr's "Above the Clouds". When this album came out (1998), Gang Starr were considered hip hop elders and had achieved legendary status. While Deck was riding the top of the Wu Tang wave. You might remember that RZA's five year plan ended in 1997 so all of the clansmen were left to fend for themselves at this point (I guess). So we got a lot of guest spots. This is one of the best guest spots of all time.

Deck is easily one of the best spitters in the Clan, and this is just one his best verses. He sounds charged on the Premier beat and apparently remembers who he is rapping next to: the all time pro Guru. So he brought his "A" game.

After spinning that I must say that Guru could have easily got his verse quoted here as well. Not to mention Premier's beat. This song is just three experts working together. Perfect.

So, here is Deck's contribution.

Yeah; I leave scientists mentally scarred, triple extra large
Wild like rock stars who smash guitars
Poison bars from the Gods bust holes in your mirage
and catch a charge shake em down like the riot squad
Invade your zone, ruin like ancient Rome
I span the universe and return to Earth to claim my throne
The maker, owner, plus soul controller
Ayatollah rest in the sky, the cloud's my sofa
Stand like Collossus, regardless to whom or what
Numerous attempts at my life, so who to trust
Who but us, to supply you with the fire?
The burning truth, 150 Absolut proof
On the mic like Moses spoke in golden scribe
Survivor of the oldest tribe whose soldiers died
I notified families, we shed tears and more
but our hands are the ammo cause the battle's still on
Sound the horn; we come rumblin through the function
Precise laser beam technique to touch somethin
When we die hard, to build the monument to honor us with
Humungous effect in the world - we could have conquered it

IN CONCLUSION: Can you get any better than that? No. Beef up your rhymes and get back to me, slackers.

Line for Line: AZ "Whips and Kicks"

Ba-BAH! All rise for another "Line for Line" post, where we examine the lyrical genius of a dope verse. Today we're going with east coast all-pro AZ who really is one of the best MCs out there despite a somewhat offputting catalog. We all respect AZ around here, and you should too, it's just his albums have too much fluff (I guess) so we don't spin them that often but we do fill up our mp3 players with his many dope shits (The Format especially).

So our dope AZ verse for today somehow comes courtesy of Raekwon and the fifty mixtapes and albums he's put out over the last few years. This is a 'back in the day track' called Whips & Kicks, where Raekwon and AZ spit about cars and shoes repsectively. I've made it clear in the past that these are two subjects that I could care less about. Cars? Who cares? Shoes? You're a dumbass for writing anything about shoes. But on this track the subject matter is fine because two capable MCs are spitting on it. No dumbasses here. So let's hear the track and we'll get to the review in a sec, okay?

Straight up, Raekwon is dope on this track. He kicks a decent rap about old school cars (the ones that people actually owned). He sounds like his battery is almost dead but he still comes correct. Good verse.

AZ, on the other hand, shows how hip hop is done. He takes the topic of shoes (which I absolutely hate) and kills a verse about them. Why? His flow is dead on time. DEAD ON TIME. DEADLY. Like holy shit. Young MCs should study this flow. Young MC should study his flow. Learn it. Know it. Be it. Flow on. Clear? AZ's rhymes are also densely stacked, and he owns the topic. I'll be honest, I don't even know what he's talking about half the time, probably because I don't give a rip about shoes. I don't even give half a rip. I don't even know what a rip is. But AZ's flow is deadly. Maybe we should check the lyrics and see if we can decipher any of this

Eighty-four mopeds, Blue and white Pro-Keds
Just started puff'n, Got instructions for an old head
Co-ved, Wally rock'n niggas tryna grow dreads
Back in the bush, Church Ave. on the jux
Shell toes, Black and white, No laces in em
Pat U-edition had his whole face in em
Straight leg denims, Taylor made shit
Kareem Laker colors, Low cut suede tip
Stay dipped, Stan Smith lay sick
Two-toned colors, Put the taps on the rubber
Puma rock'n nigga, Fuck a womber I was bigger
See a bitch in seconds an assumed that I could rip her
None hipper, Copped kicks with the zippers
The Filas arrived, It was Levi's and high
In V Tracks I was simply the mack
Everything I snatched had to match with the hat
Reebok rocker, Whole crew couldn't knock us
Fuck who? Only thing to do was just glock us
Valley Competitions and the Jordan's hit stores
I'm sitting reminiscing, T. La Rock it's yoursNow fast forward time nigga still on the grind
Haters everywhere, Nigga still gotta shine
Gucci's all kinds, Switch em up for the weather
Louis' in lime, Only do it for the pleasure
Come fresher, From the tech on the dresser
Fifth in the waist, Still crys'd and I'm laced

Okay! I still don't get it, but what a great verse. Great beat too. If you understand the lyrics, then good for you, the song is probably even better. Good job AZ (as always)!

Line for Line: Method Man on "Next Up" by the Sunz of Man

--Official Stats--
Artist: Sunz of Man
Producer: True Master
Title: Next Up
Album: "The Last Shall Be First"
Release Date: July 21, 1998

Some time ago I mentioned that I might review this track due to the dopeness of Method Man's verse. Well, it's follow through time! I will say up front that Method Man brings his game on his verse, and he out-games his hosts. But who the hell are his hosts? Nobody knows. The Sunz of Man. Who? Exactly. So this album was the first album released by Wu-Tang Records, it goes the heavily religious route but still manages to pull out a few bangers. I think it even had a major hit with the song Shining Star, featuring ODB and Earth, Wind, & Fire with production by Wyclef Jean. That's weird (and not a very good song). In the end the album was pretty good and earned significant spins in the Tort Labs back in '98 - '99. Cool.

So this song is a late album banger which isn't that much of a banger after all. The problem is that the production is a bit stale which forces the MCs to step up their energy an lyrical game. Fortunately everyone does. I guess I should just say what everyone is thinking, True Master has some dope production, but he's no RZA. I get sick of writing up reviews of medicore songs and then discovering that True Master was asleep at the boards. Come on!

While the producer may have been lacking on the beat, the MCs were not...well, some of the MCs were not. This is a posse cut, I guess, with three Sunz spitting a verse and then Method Man closing out the track, and I don't know if I can say this right but the title of the album is played out in this song. If I listed the MCs in order, best to worst, the last on that list is the first to spit. "The Last Shall Be First". Get it? Dammit this blog is stupid. What I'm trying to say is that the each MC that spits is better than the guy before him. 60 Second Assassin is first and his verse is just bad. Prodigal Sun is next and also flops. Thankfully Hell Razah brings a decent verse, kicking it off with this line:

"If I could chew glass to this Ture Master shit..."

Dope right? Yes.  So Method Man ends it and just kills everyone. He does way better than he should have. Yo, Meth, you should have saved this one for your own album, you know, to make it less wack. Okay, so here is the verse:

[Hell Razah] Next up?
[ Method Man ]
Yo, I believe that’s me.
[ Hell Razah ] Aiyyo Meth lock it down like LAPD.[ Method Man ]
While you proceed to cut the mustard, I cut the cheese.
Mr. Freeze givin' cold shoulders to MCs.
The sickest of disease,
Johnny Blaze at three hundred and sixty degrees,
my PLO steez is from here to overseas.
Guerillas in the mist swingin' from the highest trees,
bombin’ enemies.
See me in the global war being all that I can be:
camouflage fatigue, hard-headed, major league.
Got 'em under siege. Your battleship is sinkin’
20,000 leagues beneath sea level.
Adjust the treble on that thang thang get your shovel.
Can you dig it? Keep talkin’ ‘bout it while we live it.
All day, every days a Billie Holiday.
Lady sings the blues, get the street news.
By the way, have you heard crime pay?
Hit your block like that lava that burnt Pompeii: mega hot.
In the melting pot, felt the shot around the world
We unstoppable like Juggernaut, baby girl.
Armed and dangerous street militia, I'll make you famous.
Gamma-radiated verbal going through changes.

We get some required comic book references (X-Men & Spider Man), some history, some clever wordplay. It's all good, and one of Meth's best. And it's buried on this weird album that nobody heard. I would say keep up the good work Meth, but we all know that didn't happen.

JERU WEEK! Line for Line: Jeru the Damaja and Afu-Ra on "Mental Stamina" and "Physical Stamina"

This week the Tortoise General is celebrating hip hop legend Jeru the Damaja. Word Up! Plus this is a double Line for Line post covering both mental and physical stamina.

Afu-Ra and Jeru the Damaja

"Mental Stamina"

--Official Stats--
Artist: Jeru the Damaja featuring Afu-Ra
Producers: DJ Premier and Jeru the Damaja
Album: "The Sun Rises in the East"
Song: "Mental Stamina"

Release Date: May 24, 1994

If there is one thing you can say about Jeru it's that he has dope lyrics. But I think he shined the brightest when he shared the mic with his fellow Gang Starr Foundation member Afu-Ra. Mental Stamina, from Jeru's "The Sun Rises in the East" album features a back and forth between the two MCs plus a few great verses, and needless to say: it's illllllll. It was never a single or anything like that, it's one of those grimy tracks that nobody ever hears buried deep on the album. The beat is downright jarring, it's so raw that it honestly sounds like racket...which is a great thing (although it's nowhere near as chaotic as the beat on Physical Stamina, which is a beat so raw that it defies reason). So let's just get to the best part...the back and forth:

Jeru: Pugilistic linguistics, check out the mystics, we're fantistic
Afu: You mean fantastic?
Jeru: Fuck it, you'll get your ass kicked / Challenge my verbal gymnastics
Afu: Vanacrobatics
Jeru: Vocabulary calisthenics / Can't understand the mathematics are esoteric
Watch the style but also peep the lyrics /my lightning, my thunder
Way back I stomped out Her-cu-les / But now I stomp out MC's
Can't chill, because the Sun don't freeze
Heavy metal, hard like titaniam / Alchemist, I turn wax into platinum

Afu: Influential, scientifical power / My mental violence will shower
Devour at a crazy rate, my speed'll do your circuits
and I'll perforate in data banks

Mental Stamina-Jeru The Damaja(̾●̮̮̃̾•̃̾)凸 by jasc

I could honestly just print the rest of the lyrics, they are high quality all the way through. Afu calls himself a "Poisonous Taoist" and that's just amazing. Shit, I HAVE to print more...

[Afu]
I whirlwind through cities
Breaking down substances, combining matter
Test my hand skills and back bones splatter
Rough and tough although the mental will stomp ya
Pugilism electrocute like Blanka

There you go. Case closed. I know this is Jeru week and I kind of focused on Afu-Ra for this track, but WHO CARES? You gotta admit the boy kills it. But Jeru does too. Go look up the lyrics to this track, pull out your dictionary and see what these guys are saying. They are geniuses. Everybody kills it. This song is the best ever. Except maybe for...

"Physical Stamina"

--Official Stats--
Artist: Jeru the Damaja featuring Afu-Ra
Producers: DJ Premier and Jeru the Damaja
Album: "Wrath of the Math"
Song: "Physical Stamina"

Release Date: October 26, 1996

So take all of the good things I said about Mental Stamina and then apply them again to Physical Stamina. Both tracks are great (but I think Mental Stamina is a little better). Both tracks start exactly the same way ("...Let's freak that rhyme we was freakin' the other night...") but they proceed much differently. This track doesn't have a back and forth, which is a shame becasue it was the best part of the other. Much like Mental Stamina, the beat here is also racket, but this time it sounds like someone banging around an apartment and crashing into various musical instruments. It's crazy raw and a perfect fit for these brilliant MCs.
[Jeru]
I damage in the mental and physical universe
You quake the earth when you hit face-first /
Brake before it gets worse
But those that thirst for abuse get loose
'Cause soon I'll be around that neck tight like a noose
God, show n' prove
[Afu]
More strength than the Juggernaut
Electric like Magneto
Know you couldn't test Mental, or now the sequel
I slip to the floor for the grapple
I crack your collarbone, while I bust your Adam's apple

What? All other MC's just throw in the towel becasue you ain't matching that Magneto line, or any of these lines for that matter. This song is brutal. Seriously, if you have a weak constitution or are some kind of amateur, don't listen to these tracks, they'll kill you.

[Jeru]
You think that you
could stop me?
Perverted monks, so now we apply pressure
The Stamina's style is iller than its predecessor
Daoist professor, mix up the elixir
Internal power, MCs we devour

Score Jeru Mental Stamina: 10/10
Score Jeru Physical Stamina: 10/10

Primo!

Consider yourself devoured, MC or not.

Line for Line: Inspectah Deck on "Kill Too Hard" by the Wu Tang Clan

Inspectah Deck: He's in there somewhere.

--Official Stats--
Artist: Inspectah Deck
Title: "Kill Too Hard"
Album: "Wu-Tang Chamber Music"
Release Date: June 30, 2009
Aliases: Rebel INS, Rollie Fingers
Affiliations: Wu Tang Clan

Line for Line posts are meant to showcase the best lyrics ever written.  And when I say best I mean dopest.  “So, what makes for dope lyrics?” you clumsily ask.  Well, there is no definition.  Dope is dope – you can quote me on that when you complain about this blog on Angie's List! If I have to tell you what is dope then you clearly have something wrong with your judgment.  So let’s get on with me telling you what is dope.

Okay, so today we visit another latter-day Wu-Tang Clan song from the 2009 album “Wu-Tang Chamber Music”, an album which was well received by me and critics, but not the general public (apparently). "What's wrong with you, general public?" - me and critics.

So this track might be a diamond in the rough or an undiscovered gem or something valuable like that. Who knows? I do! Okay, so this track is great, it has that classic Wu-Tang sound and has U-God (so two Wu members). Plus, we’ve got Masta Ace, so a special guest appearance as well!

Anyway, Deck kills it (editor’s note: bold text, underline, italics, hyperlink to a picture of a big game hunter, and upgrade to a huge font for the words ‘kills it’). I mean, it’s a hard rap that just builds self-confidence in the listener. Like a motivational speaker or your dad or something. It’s like Deck is saying “I’m hard, now clean up your act, stupid.”  Plus the rhymes are airtight.  Add to that Deck’s trademarked flow and this is easily a great verse.  Let’s take a look….

Really?
These dudes don't want it with Deck, no, my set glow.
Hate it or you love it, but you gonna’ respect though.
You ain't got to know my name,
check the blood, sweat and tears, for years, niggas know I bang.
I'm a made nigga caking, what you call a boss.
On my own two, never taking orders from ya'll.
When I spit, get the corners involved. It's wreck on the yard.
It's House Gang, son, it's more than hard.
The life that'll glamour and glitz, best believe
on the flip side, nigga, it's them hammers and clips.
Wanna’ live in high fashion and rich, so we scramble the strip,
camouflaged with they hand on the grip.
Ain't nothing gon' stop kid from getting his due.
No, your feets not big enough to fit in his shoe.
I don't rock what you rap, niggas. They be pole.
On 'The Wire', just not HBO
They under fire, edge around the way we know.
They know they time up, guess that's why they hate me so
But yo, they will never take me though. I had to go like
Montana, licking, sniffing crazy blow.
Still I be Hard to Kill like Seagal,
warrior built, big shield and long sword.
One Six Ooh'ing it, doing it, king size
Salutations, that's respecting the king eyes.
For those that follow my lead, attract to the light
at the same time, marvel the speed.
I'm so dope, I can bottle it free
The most influential, modern day marter is he

Well, that’s a long one. But it’s line after line of pure uncut greatness.  I mean it’s really good.  So, if you don’t like it then we’ll just have to part ways now. You go your way and I’ll go mine.  My way is right here, so you’ll just have to go away from me, on your own way. Go on, get!

If you agree with me, then, welcome friend.  Go ahead and look at my other stupid posts and bad spelling and bad grammar.  Make yourself at home.

Line for Line: GZA on "Stick Me For My Riches" by the Wu Tang Clan

Line for Line: GZA on "Stick Me For My Riches" by the Wu Tang Clan

GZA: Snap Pack Official

--Official Stats--
Artist: Genius/GZA
Title: "Stick Me For My Riches"
Album: "8 Diagrams"
Release Date: December 11, 2007
Aliases: Maximillion, Allah Justice
Affiliations: Wu Tang Clan, DJ Muggs, Bill Murray

So for this blog I've been trying to bring my 'A' game on Mondays, and just dump my shit on Thursdays.  So far so good, except that Mondays have been shit as well.  So this post will be the worst one yet!  Read on!

All I'm going to do here is post the lyrics to a verse which I find particularly dope.  There are many of them, but for this week I'm going with the verse and track mentioned above.  Now, GZA has tons of clever and fantastic verses and this one certainly isn't his best, but it's up there.  This track is great overall, but it's very atypical for the Clan, yet I think it works as it's own beast.  It has a lot going for it: production and vocals by the RZA, and decent beat and hook, and verses by Meth, Deck, and GZA.  Nice.  But why does GZA's verse stand out in his career of good verses?  Because it's dope you dummy.

Basically, the RZA sets up the verse with this line:

"GZA tell them what is life..."

Now that's a big assignment.  Imagine if he asked you to do that at the start of your verse.  You would freeze, as would I.  Not the Genius though, he answers and answers well.  He gives a general description of LIFE ITSELF in one verse.  Amazing!  Check this:
RZA:

"Slice and dice, men or mice, GZA tell 'em what is life..."

GZA:
"Hey Yo! Money making, people flaking, Cash Rules, fuck the bacon
Earths quaking, head is aching, bank stop, dice shaking
Times are hard, so are jobs, scheming niggas wanna rob
Use a hoe to slob ya knob, hit you with unruly mobs
Stab you in the back and smile, watch you bleed for awhile
Hating on the agile, steal ya name and bite ya style
Hold you for a ransom note, Goliath cutting David's throat
Grab ya vest, abandon boat and leave you out at sea to float"

What can I say?  Nothing.  Which is exactly what you should be saying.  Now, if you disagree with me and say "This verse?  I think not."  Then I want to see YOU write a verse half as good describing life.  You can send it to me at dagdilignet@gmail.com.  Do it.  I'll post it, then we can have a vote or something.  Trust me, you ain't e-mailing me anything.  Hang it up.  GZA won dope verse of the "everything you think is important".

It also should be noted that Deck's verse on this track is insanely good as well...but I'll save that for another lazy post.

Score: 10/10
