U-God's Resume #19: "Bells of War"

--Official Stats--
Artist: Wu-Tang Clan
Song: "Bells of War"
Album: Wu-Tang Forever
Release Date: June 3, 1997

Finally a song I know and like. Bells of War is an all around good song. Not only that, I know U-God is on it and I know that he does a good job. How? Because I still listen to this song sometimes, ya frog ass dummy.

"Bells of War"

So the first thing that hits me with this song is the incredable beat, it has some kind of weird emotional pull, it's kind of deep and a little depressing (which is a good thing as it adds weight to the lyrics).  RZA really did a good job here. I always thought that this song should have been the single instead of It's Yourz, although both are good tracks. So, U-God sets it off:

Yeah, yo, Give me the cue
Skip the introduction, prosate the lip function
The junction get rushed by some grimy people bustin weed
Splatter your belly like some Attica fellas
Use a firearm good, bloods go for hard swelling
Insert the spasm, yes the dirty hurt has them
Thoroughbred thugs insert the phantasm
Verbal smarts, spark the word, visit my scripture
Exotic wine, holding nine, Picasso pictures
When the rhyme pivot you now, limit your chance
Bodyguard the lyric with unlimited stance
Words seem to zing on down to Bejing
When we touch down you crown renowned kings

I think we can safely say that U-God isn't saying much in his verses. Maybe he's too artistic for my mind to figure out (probably), but I just don't get it. What are you talking about U-God? As a matter of fact, all the MCs who spit here (Meth, RZA, Masta Killa, and Ghost) drop ill verses, but what's the point of this song? It's like it's themeless. Whatever. U-God's verse is good and fits the beat well. But once again, this song is pwned by the RZA, who is basically on point for this whole album. Masta Killa just has a short bridge, but he stands out as well. So that put's U-God up against Ghost and Meth for worst........and U-God is the worst. But, as is the trend on this album, the worst is still good, it's not as good as the rest of the clan.

Now, I feel Iike I keep saying the same thing over and over...U-God is good but is outshined by one (or more) of his brotheren. So, I wonder if U had spit this verse on as a guest spot on someone elses album (like Busta Rhymes) if I would still be saying that it was good? Who knows?

Track Score: 9/10
U-God’s Score: 6/10
Impact on Rep (+,-,=): Slightly Improves

Next Week: More "Wu-Tang Forever", this time Heaterz.

About this series: “U-God’s Resume" is a series of posts which looks at each line of U-God’s entire career to determine if his status as ‘wack’ is justified (as labeled by internet morons). I think it is not. U-God is dope. We'll prove it. Leave it to the Tort Team.
